WHAT WE BELIEVE
Here's a short video showing what Christianity is all about.
Here's a summary of what we believe as a church family.
There is one living and true God. He exists in a relationship of three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He is three in one and one in three, equal in being and different in role. These roles are distinct in God's work in the world. God is sovereign in all things: including creation, revelation, judgment, redemption and establishing His Kingdom. He is loving and He is in control. He deserves to be honoured, praised and glorified as our Creator and ruler, and can be completely trusted in everything.
We are made in God's Trinitarian image. That is we are made both male and female. Equal, and different, in a reflection of God's image that we bear. We were created to be in a loving relationship with God, made to rule the world He made, under Him. We are designed to be His people, in His place, under His loving rule and blessing. But that is not the way it is now. We have rejected God as King of our lives, and try to rule life our own way. This is what the Bible calls sin. No-one is exempt from this. By nature and nuture, humanity is sinful, and positively inclined to do evil. We fail to rule ourselves, our society or the world. As a result, we rightly face the just wrath (anger) of God, and His just judgement on each one of us. We face condemnation by God. After death we will face His anger and judgement, and there is nothing we ourselves can do to avoid this.
About the Bible
There is no other way we can truly know about God except what He has told us. He has done so, fully and completely, in the pages of the Bible. The Bible is God's word, all of it. It is how we get to know God. It is what we need for life and godliness. The Bible is divinely inspired and infallible as it was originally given. It is sufficient and enough for us to get to know God, and it is essential for continuing in the Christian life. The whole story of the Bible is the story of the relationship between God and His people, based on His word. Jesus is the central character around whom the whole Bible fits together and points towards.
Jesus, as revealed to us in the Bible, is God's rescue plan come to solve the problem of sin. He is the Son of God, conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He is fully God and fully man. He lived a perfect life, enduring temptation yet submitting completely to the will of God the Father. He came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. He did this by dying on a cross in our place. He took God's punishment for sin that we deserve, and died for us. He physically died, and was buried. Three days later, He physically rose again from the dead: the proof of the cross working, the guarantee that sinners who have trusted in His death will one day rise again too. He ascended to the Father and sits at His right hand as ruler of all. He has promised and will come back to bring God's people home.
The only way to be rescued from God's right anger is through Jesus' death on the cross. Only through His penal (punished), substitutionary (in our place), atoning (making right with God) death, and His perfect life lived before that, can sinners be made at peace with God. It is a perfect swap. Jesus takes our badness and gives us His perfect goodness. Trusting alone in that death is how we are made right with God. There is no effort on our part at all. Jesus' death demonstrates God's love for us, and through it God forgives sins, regenerates lives, and gives people who trust Him eternal hope for the future. The work of the Holy Spirit allows people to repent (turn away from sin and towards Christ), and continually grows them to be more like Christ until the day He returns. Salvation is entirely a work of God's grace, and not human effort. There is no other way to God. Salvation in Christ is a once for all achievement. No-one who truly trusts Christ can be snatched away from Him.
About the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son. He lives in believers, and continually points them towards Jesus, like spotlighting an actor on a stage. He grows believers to be more and more like Christ, transforming them and regenerating them. His work in believers' hearts means that salvation is shown by godly conduct and works pleasing to God. His presence is the guarantor of the future hope of resurrection for the believer, and He equips God's people for works of service within the body of Christ: the church.
About the Church
The church is not a building, or an organisation. It is a gathering of people, united by the blood of Jesus Christ. This gathering is diverse: a mix of older and younger, male and female, rich and poor, united soley by the blood of Christ Jesus. The visible church family gathered is an expression of the universal church: every believer past, present and future united by God's saving work in Christ. The church's job is to point people towards Christ by their life and words, to promote the gospel message, and extend the rule of God's kingdom as more people trust in Him for rescue. Within this community, men and women are to express God-given gifts to demonstrate His love and further His work until the return of Jesus.
About the world to come
Jesus will come back, as He has promised to do so. This is a time known by God alone, and cannot be predicted. When Jesus returns He will bring this world to a close and bring about the world to come. Jesus' return in person will bring judgement. Those who are not justified (made right with God) by the cross will be condemned and face eternal punishment in Hell. Those who are justified by Christ will reign forever in the world to come, with God: the final fulfilment of God's promises made throughout the Bible. Sin, suffering and death will be no more. The Bible calls this the New Creation. It is the hope for everyone who trusts in Christ alone to be in that world, as God's people, under His loving rule and blessing, fully restored.
